CATS has just tested a prototype of their latest development successfully: An Iridium/GSM tag. This tag has the unique abilty to use cheap mobile networks to relay data of all kinds, and if no mobile coverage is available it automatically switches to Satellite, which is almost always available.

French researchers film Humpback whale suckling for the first time

The team around Dr Isabelle Charrier have managed to film the suckling of a humpback whale calf with a CATS Cam. This is the first time where this event could be filmed from the calf’s point of view.

CATS has been recognized by the Television, Arts and Sciences Academy for their engineering contribution toward Prime Time Television.

Capable of recording up to 36 hours of image and sound on a multisensory-controlled video camera with maximum 4K resolution, CATS Cam can be programmed to record in different lighting situations, including infrared for nocturnal shoots. CATS Cam has resulted in an extraordinary level of access and understanding of the natural world for scientists and viewing audiences alike.

World-first footage by Minke whales taken with CATS Cams

The latest project of Dr Ari Friedlander (Oregon State University), Prof. Jeremy Goldbogen and Dr Dave Cade (Stanford University) saw the CATS Cam, once again, taken to the Antarctic. This time they were trying to tag Minke whales and Orcas. The project was supported by WWF Australia and it was the first time that any footage was obtained by Minke whales ever !! The team were able to make dozens of successful deployments with valuable data recorded.

CATS uses global Vodafone for GSM tags

CATS now managed to get global Vodafone contract for their CATS GSM devices. This is an important step to enhance the global coverage of the CATS GSM devices with one service provider to cover the planet. The user can now just switch on the device and is almost guaranteed to have network coverage.

CATS has now responded to the US market’s decision to turn off their 2G network with the introduction of their new 3/4G capable CATS-GSM. With only a minor increae in size and weight, the new CATS-GSM tag performs now even faster and with more data throughput, making the collection and transmission of large data sets possible. CATS working with Norwegian Orca Survey

Norwegian Orca Survey, headed by Eve and Richard, have been using CATS-Cam tags to find out more about the whales in the norwegian fjiords near Andenes.

CATS is planning to support NOS in the quest to find out more about Orcas and other whales in order to improve the conservation of those animals.
